What is beef tallow skincare?

Beef tallow skincare uses purified and rendered beef fat as a deeply nourishing moisturizer for the skin. Tallow is rich in skin-supporting fatty acids and works as an emollient to soften the skin and help reduce moisture loss.

At Truly Tallow, we use grass-finished Alberta beef tallow, render it ourselves and combine it with thoughtfully selected ingredients to create simple, nutrient-rich skincare for the whole family.

Why is tallow good for your skin?

Tallow is naturally rich in fatty acids that help moisturize, soften and support the skin's protective barrier.

Unlike conventional lotions that are largely made up of water, our tallow creams are highly concentrated and water-free. A very small amount provides long-lasting moisture, helping dry or depleted skin feel softer, smoother and more comfortable.

Is tallow similar to the natural oils in our skin?

Tallow contains many of the same types of fatty acids found within our skin's natural lipid barrier, including oleic, palmitic and stearic acids.

These lipids help protect the skin and prevent excessive moisture loss, which is one of the reasons tallow works so beautifully as a simple facial and body moisturizer.

Is Truly Tallow made with grass-fed or grass-finished beef tallow?

We use grass-finished Alberta beef tallow sourced from regenerative Alberta ranches.

Grass-finished means the cattle are raised and finished on a forage-based diet rather than being grain-finished. We intentionally source locally whenever possible and render our tallow ourselves so we have control over the ingredient that forms the foundation of our skincare.

Where is Truly Tallow made?

Truly Tallow is an Alberta-made Canadian skincare company. Our products are handcrafted in small batches using locally sourced Alberta tallow and thoughtfully selected ingredients.

We believe in supporting Canadian agriculture, local businesses and regenerative farming whenever possible.

Does tallow skincare smell like beef?

No! Properly rendered tallow should not leave you smelling like beef.

We carefully render and purify our tallow before using it in our skincare products. Our unscented products have a very mild natural scent, while our scented products get their aroma from intentionally selected essential oils and natural ingredients rather than synthetic fragrance.

Because tallow is a natural ingredient, however, subtle differences in scent, colour and texture can occur from batch to batch.

Is tallow good for acne-prone or oily skin?

It can be. The formulation matters just as much as the tallow itself.

Our Unblemished Tallow Face Cream was specifically formulated with combination, oily and acne-prone skin in mind. Instead of pairing the tallow with jojoba like many traditional tallow balms, Unblemished contains lightweight squalane and rosehip oil, along with helichrysum essential oil.

Squalane has an exceptionally lightweight feel, while rosehip provides essential fatty acids and antioxidants. Together, they create a facial moisturizer that nourishes the skin without the heavy feel many people associate with tallow balm.

Does tallow clog pores?

Whether a product causes congestion can vary from person to person, and no skincare product can guarantee that it will work for every person's skin.

The amount you use also matters. Tallow skincare is extremely concentrated, so more is not better. For facial use, begin with a very small amount and increase only when your skin needs it.

If you have oily or blemish-prone skin, we recommend Unblemished, which was intentionally developed for facial use and formulated with lightweight squalane and rosehip oil.

Can tallow help with the appearance of aging skin?

Tallow is an excellent moisturizer for skin that is becoming drier or less supple with age.

Supporting the skin barrier and preventing moisture loss can help skin appear plumper, smoother and more supple, making dryness-related fine lines appear less prominent.

For facial skincare, our Unblemished formula also contains squalane, rosehip oil and helichrysum. Rosehip naturally contains essential fatty acids and antioxidant compounds, while squalane helps soften the skin and reduce moisture loss.

What is the difference between Unblemished and your Unscented Tallow Cream?

Unblemished was formulated specifically as a facial moisturizer, particularly for combination, oily and blemish-prone skin. It combines grass-finished Alberta tallow with squalane, rosehip oil and helichrysum essential oil.

Our Unscented Tallow Cream is an extremely simple combination of grass-finished Alberta tallow and organic jojoba oil. It is a richer option designed for sensitive or dry skin and for anyone looking for an essential-oil-free tallow moisturizer.

If your main concern is your face, blemishes or oily/combination skin, start with Unblemished. If your priority is simple, rich moisture with no essential oils, start with Unscented.

Can I use tallow on my face?

Absolutely. Tallow can be used as both a facial and body moisturizer.

For facial skincare, we recommend beginning with a tiny amount. Warm it between your fingertips and gently press it into clean skin. Applying it to slightly damp skin can also help you spread a smaller amount over the entire face.

Our Unblemished Tallow Face Cream was formulated specifically for facial use.

Is tallow good for eczema, psoriasis or other skin concerns?

Many of our customers specifically choose Truly Tallow because they have found it incredibly helpful for eczema, psoriasis, very dry skin and other stubborn skin concerns.

Tallow is naturally rich in fatty acids such as oleic, palmitic and stearic acid, which help nourish, repair and restore the skin barrier. A stronger, healthier skin barrier is better able to hold onto moisture and protect against the dryness, cracking and irritation that often accompany compromised skin.

Because eczema and psoriasis are medical conditions, we cannot claim that tallow treats or cures them. However, many customers tell us that consistently moisturizing with tallow has made a noticeable difference in the comfort, softness and overall appearance of their skin.

For very sensitive or reactive skin, we recommend starting with one of our unscented, essential-oil-free formulas and patch testing first.

How much tallow should I use?

Less than you think!

Our tallow skincare is highly concentrated because it doesn't contain the large percentage of water found in conventional lotions and creams.

For your face, begin with approximately a pea-sized amount or less. For the body, start with a small amount and add more as needed.

If your skin feels overly greasy after application, you're probably using too much.

Why doesn't Truly Tallow use water in its tallow creams?

Water-based skincare requires emulsifiers to keep oil and water mixed and generally requires a preservation system to prevent microbial growth.

Our traditional tallow creams and body butters are water-free, allowing us to create concentrated formulas with intentionally simple ingredient lists.

This is also why you only need a small amount of Truly Tallow at a time.

Why can my tallow look or feel slightly different from my last jar?

Because we work with real, minimally processed ingredients rather than trying to make every batch artificially identical.

Tallow is a natural fat, and small variations in temperature, season, ingredient composition and storage can affect its colour, firmness or texture.

These natural variations do not necessarily mean there is anything wrong with your product — they're part of choosing traditionally made, small-batch skincare.

Can tallow melt?

Yes. Tallow is a natural fat and can soften or melt when exposed to high temperatures.

If your tallow arrives softened or melted during warm weather, place it somewhere cool and allow it to firm back up before using it. Melting may change the whipped texture of a product, but it does not automatically mean the product has gone bad.

For best results, store your tallow products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.

Do I need to refrigerate tallow skincare?

No. Our tallow skincare does not need to be refrigerated.

Store your products in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight, heat and excessive moisture. Always use clean, dry hands when applying products from a jar to help protect the integrity of your skincare.

Can I use Truly Tallow products on children?

Yes! It was created originally for my youngest baby at the time for moisturizer and diaper cream. Our collection includes products intentionally created with families in mind, including our Head to Toe Baby Whipped Tallow and Unscented, both essential-oil-free options for babies and kids under 2.

Are Truly Tallow products natural?

We focus on simple formulations made with recognizable ingredients such as grass-finished Alberta beef tallow, organic carrier oils, mineral ingredients and thoughtfully selected essential oils depending on the product.

Each product is different, so we list its full ingredients on the individual product page so you can make the best choice for you and your family.

Do you use synthetic fragrance?

Absolutely not! Our scented tallow products are fragranced using ingredients such as essential oils and naturally derived aromatic ingredients rather than conventional synthetic fragrance blends.

We also offer unscented and essential-oil-free options for people who prefer them.

Always check the individual ingredient list if you have sensitivities or ingredients you specifically avoid.

Are Truly Tallow products suitable for sensitive skin?

We intentionally offer simple options for sensitive skin, but everyone's skin is different.

Our Unscented Tallow Cream contains just grass-finished Alberta tallow and organic jojoba oil and is an excellent place to start if you prefer an essential-oil-free moisturizer.

We always recommend reviewing the full ingredients and patch testing a new skincare product before widespread use if you have particularly reactive skin.

Is Truly Tallow skincare made in small batches?

Yes. Truly Tallow products are handcrafted by me in Alberta in small batches.

Small-batch production allows us to maintain close control over our ingredients and formulations while continuing to source locally whenever possible.

Is your packaging plastic-free?

Reducing unnecessary plastic is an important part of Truly Tallow. We use packaging such as glass containers and recyclable cardboard tubes throughout our collection wherever appropriate.

Our packaging, like our products, are toxin free.
